Leaky Paywall – Reader Bar
Show every reader their next step.
Reader Bar adds a slim bar to the top or bottom of every page, and it changes with the reader. A first-time visitor is invited to subscribe. A subscriber whose card failed is asked to update it. A reader whose subscription ended is invited back. Each reader sees only the message that fits their subscription right now.
Recover failed payments before they become cancellations. When a renewal fails, the reader sees “Your last payment didn’t go through” with a button to update their card, on every page, until it’s fixed. Most failed payments are expired cards, not readers who meant to leave.
Keep subscribers who are about to leave. Readers who have cancelled but still have access see the date their subscription ends. With Recurring Payments and Stripe, a “Keep my subscription” button lets them undo the cancellation in one click.
Win back lapsed readers, even when they’re logged out. Reader Bar remembers readers who used to subscribe. When they come back without signing in, they see “Welcome back” and an invitation to sign in and restart, instead of the same pitch a stranger gets.
Turn free readers into paying subscribers. Free registered readers see an upgrade message, and logged-out visitors see your subscribe offer. You can set a different message for each subscription level.
Make subscribers feel known. Signed-in readers are greeted by first name (“Welcome, Jane”), linked to their account page. Paid subscribers see what else you offer, like gift subscriptions or group plans, instead of a sales pitch for something they already have.
See what it earns. Reader Bar counts views, clicks, closes and conversions for each reader state, and shows the last 30 days on its settings page. If you use Leaky Paywall Insights, bar clicks and conversions appear there too.
Works with your site. The bar works behind full-page caching, and readers with no subscription history load it without any extra request to your server. It stays off your login, subscribe and account pages, and steps aside when the paywall, List Builder or a Conditional Display Notice is showing. Readers can close it, and a closed bar comes back after a set number of days, or after one day for urgent states like a failed card.
Write it your way. Change the message, link and button labels for each state, turn individual states off, and choose the top or bottom of the page.
Requirements: Included with Leaky Paywall Pro. The failed-card and keep-my-subscription states require the Recurring Payments extension.
